The Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 1986 was held at the studios of broadcaster DR in Copenhagen, Denmark to determine which song would win the opportunity to represent Denmark at the 1986 Eurovision Song Contest. It was hosted by Jørgen de Mylius.

Format
Ten songs took part in the competition, five regional juries across Denmark voted and the five songs with the most votes advanced to the second round decider.
The regional juries awarded 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 points to each of the five finalists to determine a winner.
Opening Act
The opening act was a choreographed performance by the Louise Frevert Ballet to the London Symphony Orchestra rendition of the songs "Born in the U.S.A." by Bruce Springsteen and "Two Tribes" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
Which was followed by a brief re-opening choreography to "Two Tribes" at the beginning of the second round broadcast.
