- 3 May – The Eurovision Song Contest is held in Grieghallen in Bergen, Norway. The song 'J'aime la vie, performed by Sandra Kim for Belgium, wins the contest.
- 29 June – Argentina wins the FIFA World Cup by defeating West Germany, 3–2, in the final game at the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City, Mexico.[2]
- 1 September – Nintendo released the NES in several Euorpean countries.
