- 11 March – Mikhail Gorbachev is appointed chairman of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.[2]
- 4 May – The Eurovision Song Contest is held in Scandinavium in Göteborg, Sweden. The song La det swinge, performed by the Bobbysocks for Norway, wins the contest.
- 15 September – Olof Palme remains Prime Minister of Sweden following a victory for the Social Democrats when the 1985 Swedish parliamentary election is held.
- 18 October – Nintendo released the NES in North America.[3]
